The Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership Scheme

A unique landscape

Sandside Bay, Graemsay (c) Tom Muir

The great anchorage of Scapa Flow at 312 Km sq (120 sq miles) is one of the largest natural harbours in the world. It is almost enclosed by its shores and sheltered by islands. The Flow has been valued as a safe haven for shipping since the time of the Vikings in the 1st millenium AD, and has been under human habitation for at least five thousand years.
There are many fascinating archaeological remains to explore, and a delightful range of walks to experience. The diversity of natural habitats are home to a fascinating range of wildlife, some populations of which are of international importance.
