The Scapa Flow Landscape Partnership Scheme

Since earliest times mankind has taken part in rituals and festivals.

This was a great opportunity to keep family units together, renew old friendships and, of course, to make new friends.

As well as being a social occasion, festivals helped to preserve traditions and taught the younger generation new skills.

In some cases festivals were carried out to ward off evil and some were just for fun.

This section of the website looks at some very old festivals, such as the Horse Festival in South Ronaldsay, as well newer additions to the Orcadian scene, such as as Orkney Folk Festival.
