A curse on the sands at Scapa

A thimble in the sand recreatedIn 1850 local newspaper The Orkney Herald told the story of a Shetland woman who had waded a few paces into the sea near Nether Scapa, pushed a thimbled finger into the sand, and then left the thimble in the sand.

She promised a curse and proclaimed that whales would never again be captured in Scapa Flow until the thimble was found.
