The Black Doctor

In the 1890s James Budge, of Cleat, South Ronaldsay, was known as Hairy Jimac or the Black Doctor.

It was thought he had magical powers and was often called in to treat and cure disease.

One night he was going over the heather with a neighbouring farmer when he said: "If you'll kick that tussack, I'll shaa you the faerires." The farmer was much too nervous to do so.
