Ayre Broch, St Mary’s, Holm

This probable broch site in Holm stands on the shore of the Loch of Ayre, just outside St Mary's village. It was excavated in 1901-2 but the dig record is sparse. Finds included 'a large quantity of pottery', a whale vertebrae cup, a bone awl, and two bone dice, one of which is in the National Museums of Scotland collection. You can read more about this site in our Archaeology section.
