Breakna Broch, Orphir

Also known as the Hillock o Breckney/Breckna/Brecknay, this mound is a short walk from Swanbister House, and a possible broch site. It stands about 2m high, is about 20m in diameter, and contains part of a curved wall. In 1797 it was described as 'a circular tower of about 180 feet circumference', and was said to be associated with Sveinn Breastrope, a famous Viking character mentioned in The Orkneyinga Saga. There is more information about this site in the Archaeology section.
