HMS Royal Oak, Scapa Bay

Only a few weeks into the war, German U-boat U47 entered Scapa Flow and fired torpedoes on HMS Royal Oak; she sank within 15 minutes. Not only was the loss of life enormous, but the sinking of the ship was a strategic disaster, ultimately leading to the building of the Churchill Barriers.
