Hobbister RSPB Reserve

This reserve is a haven for many different kinds of birds that breed and nest on the moorland, including hen harriers, short-eared owls, and red-throated divers. On the coast you may see black guillemots (tysties in Orkney) and red-breasted mergansers. Hobbister is easy to reach from Kirkwall, Orkney's capital, and the peat which gives the local whisky its distinctive taste is cut here.  Dogs are welcome, but sheep graze on the reserve, so if you take your dog with you please keep it under control at all times. Lovely Waulkmill Beach is just to the west.
