SS Pontos, wreck site, Water Sound
Built in 1891, this steel steamship was formerly known as St John City and Clan MacNab. SS Pontos was sunk in Water Sound on 30 November 1914, between the islands of Burray and South Ronaldsay. A report on 1992 records that the wreck is 'corroded but substantially intact' and lies N-S off the coast of South Ronaldsay, close to Barrier no 4. The wooden mast was visible until the 1990s, when it blew down in a gale. Such was the subsequent build-up of sand at the barrier, that the wreck is now buried.
